What constitutes illegal burning?
Illegal burning is the open burning of combustible materials where the products of combustion are emitted into the open air without passing through a chimney or stack except as permitted under applicable state rules and regulations (Iowa Department of Natural Resources Administrative Code).
State rules prohibit burning items that can be locally recycled. Common household trash such as synthetics, plastics, metals, and packaging release potent chemicals when burned. Even common paper products such as junk mail, cardboard, newsprint, and magazines contain chemical dyes, coatings, pigments and chlorine.
